




Black Swamp Walk
The Black Swamp located at the Currency Creek Winery is one of three Fleurieu Peninsula swamps that is listed on the National Estate Register. The register is an inventory of natural and cultural sites in Australia. It includes sites that have aesthetic, historical and cultural sites in Australia. These places are recognized as worth preserving to pass onto future generations.
Currency Creek Winery is committed to preserving and restoring the Black Swamp as there are quite a few rare and endangered species which make their home there. One of these species is Trilochin procerum or Water Ribbons, these help with water purification, helps to slow the water flow and provides surface canopy for the frogs and insects. Another significant resident of the swamp is the Acanthoferonia ferox or Carabid Beetle which was thought to the extinct for 108 years but was rediscovered on the property in 1996. Another illusive species spotted in the swamp is the Stipiturus malachurus or Emu-Wren is one of the most nationally endangered birds of South Australia. A very shy small bird it depends completely on swamps such as the Black Swamp for its survival.
This 3km loop is about a 40 minute walk. It is important appropriate clothing and good walking shoes are worn. We ask that you adhere to the trail and take with you only photographs and leave only footprints.
Wander along the banks of the swamp towards the historic Viaduct which forms part of the Goolwa to Strathalbyn railway line. Cross the creek and see the remnants of yesteryear dappled through the trees. Walk through the native flower plantations winding through picturesque vineyards as you return to the Winery.
